ADVANCED DRIVER IMPROVEMENT (ADI)

Florida Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) Course Details

If your Florida driver's license has been suspended or revoked, you are required to enroll in ADI school, or the 12-hour Advanced Driver Improvement course, before your license can be reinstated or before you can apply for a hardship license. Completion of ADI school is also required for drivers who have been classified as Habitual Traffic Offenders (HTOs). The ADI course can also be taken by a driver who has been ordered by a Florida judge or court to complete a 12-hour ADI program.

Attendance of ADI School

Attendance of a State-approved 12-hour Advanced Driver Improvement (ADI) course is required prior to license reinstatement and/or application for a hardship license for individuals whose Florida driver's license has been suspended or revoked. A person's driver license will remain suspended indefinitely until he or she submits proof of ADI course enrollment to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). Some common reasons for driver license suspension or revocation include the following:

•Accumulation of points
•Classification as a habitual traffic offender (HTO)
•Conviction of DUI charge*

*NOTE: Individuals convicted of DUI are required to attend a State-approved DUI course (and in some cases an aggressive driving course). The ADI course is required for license reinstatement, but it does not satisfy the State's requirement for attendance of an approved DUI program or aggressive driving course.

Drivers are also sometimes required by a judge or court in Florida to attend an ADI course.

What Does the ADI Course Teach?

The ADI course teaches participants to accept responsibility for their license suspension / revocation by focusing on the behaviors that led to their suspension or revocation and identifying the associated costs, such as reinstatement fees, tickets, and time lost from work / family / leisure activities. The classroom version of the ADI course utilizes group interaction, facilitated by a highly trained instructor, to engage all course participants in discussion and to motivate the group to work together toward the achievement of behavioral changes that will prevent future license suspensions or negative consequences.

DTA's ADI course is the only Florida Advanced Driver Improvement course that teaches students how to control their emotions and attitudes through the understanding of the concept of Attitude States. Using Dr. Eric Berne's groundbreaking theory of Transactional Analysis (TA), the ADI course teaches students that each of us has three Attitude States -- Parent, Adult, and Child -- that constantly influence our behavior. Learning how to identify these Attitude States is the key to controlling them, which can be critical during potentially hazardous activities such as driving a motor vehicle. Students learn that remaining in the Adult Attitude State is not only the best way to drive safely, but the best way to eliminate the traffic citations that can lead to a suspended or revoked license.
